LUTENYL, LUTERAN, DEPO PROVERA

Progesterone-Based Contraceptives and Meningiomas

Several studies, including some conducted many years ago, have demonstrated the existence of a link between the use of progesterone-based contraceptives, or progestins, and the development of meningiomas.

Medicinal Products Concerned

These include, in particular, Lutényl, Lutéran, and Depo-Provera.

Lutényl (nomegestrol acetate) is a progesterone derivative. It is prescribed to women suffering from certain gynaecological conditions, such as endometriosis, as well as heavy, irregular, and prolonged menstrual bleeding. It is also prescribed for contraceptive purposes.

Lutéran (chlormadinone acetate) has no longer been marketed since 31 January 2022. It was prescribed to women for certain gynaecological conditions and for contraceptive use.

Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate) is an injectable contraceptive intended for women, administered every three months.

Identified Health Risks

Several epidemiological studies have shown that women exposed to these medicinal products face an increased risk of developing meningiomas. In particular, multiple studies have demonstrated an elevated risk of meningioma associated with the prolonged use of Lutényl, Lutéran, and Depo-Provera.

Several legal actions are currently underway in various countries in relation to Depo-Provera.

Le Tutour Avocats is reviewing potential legal actions in France and abroad on behalf of women who have used these progestin-based medicines and developed meningioma, as well as those who have not developed the condition.
